Labour Party conference 2024
With the Labour Party conference concluding yesterday, we highlight key points from Angela Rayner’s speech, the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government, in which she laid out Labour’s vision for the housing sector.
Rayner stated that “Labour is tackling the Tories’ housing crisis” and committed to getting Britain building decent homes for working families, stating that change “must begin at home.”
She outlined plans for a new planning framework aimed at unlocking access to affordable homes and delivering the largest boost to social and affordable housing in a generation. Additionally, the introduction of Labour’s Renters’ Bill will aim to rebalance the relationship between tenants and landlords, including ending no-fault evictions.
Rayner said, “Whether you’re a leaseholder, tenant, homebuyer, or without a home, this government is on your side. But my mission is not just to build houses—it’s to build homes.”
On the issue of social housing, she criticised the Conservatives for allowing new social housing to plummet, promising that Labour will reverse this trend by building more social homes than are lost within the first year of their government.
She concluded her speech by urging swift action: “So, Conference, let’s get on with it.” Speaking on behalf of the housing industry, one might say: please do!
