The Crown is a Grade II Listed Building located at the north edge of the Twickenham Conservation Area. Although a protected late eighteenth century structure and important local facility, given the current climate and market for public housing, this stood vacant in 2012 and subject to an increasing trend of decay. Proposals again constituted a conservation-led scheme entailing repair, refurbishment and restoration to its original use as a public house. Minor alterations to improve functioning – specifically the open planning of the rear trade area; new entrance to rear; reconfiguration of existing toilets; conversion of outbuildings to storage, dining areas and extension of kitchens etc. – were designed with full reference to the existing plan and layout and with full respect for the hierarchy of spaces, this from a point of view of use and significance arising from phasing. Again, repair and restoration works comprised the retention and cleaning of the surviving Victorian flooring; the replacement of plastic windows for more appropriate models in terms of form and material; the removal of a modern breeze-block boiler room; the retention and refurbishment of Crittal windows to later phases of extension; and the restoration of doors, fireplaces, cornicing, dado, architrave and parquet flooring. The extremely damaging failure of guttering was also remedied. Urbanissta negotiated and oversaw the Listed Building Consent process, this being granted in November 2012.
